Chitwan National Park – Nepal’s Wildlife Paradise
Chitwan National Park is Nepal’s first national park and one of the country’s greatest conservation success stories. Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the park protects more than 950 square kilometres of subtropical forests, grasslands, wetlands, and river systems in Nepal’s southern Terai region.
The park is internationally renowned for its population of greater one-horned rhinoceros and is one of the best places in Asia to experience wildlife in its natural habitat. Visitors may also encounter crocodiles, wild elephants, deer, monkeys, sloth bears, and, with some luck, the elusive Royal Bengal Tiger.

Wildlife of Chitwan National Park
Greater One-Horned Rhinoceros
Chitwan National Park is one of the best places in the world to see the endangered greater one-horned rhinoceros in its natural habitat. Thanks to decades of successful conservation efforts, the park is now home to one of the largest populations of these remarkable animals.
Royal Bengal Tiger
Although sightings are never guaranteed, Chitwan National Park is one of the few places in Nepal where visitors may encounter the elusive Royal Bengal Tiger. The park’s dense forests and grasslands provide important habitat for this iconic predator.
Mugger Crocodile & Gharial
The rivers of Chitwan support two species of crocodiles. Visitors frequently spot mugger crocodiles basking on riverbanks, while the critically endangered gharial can often be seen along quieter sections of the Rapti River.

With more than 500 recorded bird species, Chitwan is regarded as one of Nepal’s premier bird-watching destinations. Kingfishers, hornbills, eagles, storks, parakeets, and countless migratory birds can be observed throughout the year.
