1. Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple)

Perched atop a hill overlooking Kathmandu, Swayambhunath is one of Nepal’s oldest and most sacred religious sites. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is revered by both Buddhists and Hindus and is believed to be over 2,000 years old. The iconic white stupa, adorned with the all-seeing eyes of Buddha, is surrounded by temples, prayer wheels, shrines, and colourful prayer flags. 2. Boudhanath

Boudhanath is one of the largest Buddhist stupas in the world and one of the most important centres of Tibetan Buddhism outside Tibet. Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the massive white dome and golden spire dominate the skyline and attract pilgrims from across the Himalayas. Visitors can join locals and monks as they walk clockwise around the stupa, spinning prayer wheels and chanting mantras in a centuries-old tradition known as kora. Surrounded by monasteries, rooftop cafés, and traditional Tibetan shops, Boudhanath offers a peaceful and deeply spiritual atmosphere while providing a fascinating insight into Nepal’s rich Buddhist heritage.

3. Pashupatinath Temple

Pashupatinath Temple is Nepal’s most sacred Hindu temple and one of the most important religious sites dedicated to Lord Shiva in the world. Situated on the banks of the sacred Bagmati River, this UNESCO World Heritage Site attracts thousands of pilgrims, sadhus, and devotees each year. The temple complex features beautifully carved pagoda-style architecture, numerous shrines, temples, and traditional cremation ghats where Hindu funeral ceremonies take place. While the main temple is accessible only to practising Hindus, visitors can explore the surrounding complex and observe the rich spiritual traditions that have been practised here for centuries. 4. Kathmandu Durbar Square

Kathmandu Durbar Square is the historic heart of Nepal’s capital and one of the country’s most significant UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Once the royal palace complex of the Malla and Shah kings, the square is home to an extraordinary collection of ancient temples, courtyards, shrines, and traditional Newari architecture. Visitors can explore highlights such as the Hanuman Dhoka Palace, Kumari Ghar (home of the Living Goddess Kumari), and numerous intricately carved temples that showcase Nepal’s rich artistic and cultural heritage. Despite suffering damage during the 2015 earthquake, ongoing restoration efforts continue to preserve this remarkable site, offering visitors a fascinating journey through centuries of Nepalese history, royalty, religion, and craftsmanship.

5. Bhaktapur Ancient City

Bhaktapur Durbar Square is one of the finest examples of traditional Newari architecture and medieval urban planning in Nepal. Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the square forms the cultural and historical centre of the ancient city of Bhaktapur, which was once an independent kingdom within the Kathmandu Valley. Visitors can wander through beautifully preserved courtyards, intricate temples, royal palaces, and narrow brick-paved streets that have changed little over the centuries. Highlights include the magnificent 55-Window Palace, Vatsala Temple, Nyatapola Temple—the tallest pagoda-style temple in Nepal—and Pottery Square, where traditional craftsmanship continues today.
